How To Properly Get Rid Of Those Unwanted Springtime Critters

Spring is here!

The weather is great, the flowers are blossoming, but the springtime critters are also coming out.

It's important to know how to get rid of these rodents properly. Using the wrong pesticide could be killing more animals than you are trying too and causing major harm to the environment.

That's why the folks from Poison Free Malibu join the House Whisperer to give their tips on keeping the rats out.

Repel. Exclude. Deter

Starting off with Repel there are different ways to do it. Poison Free Malibu recommends planting a border of mint varieties, lavender, rosemary, sage, marigolds, snapdragons, geraniums.

To Exclude there are multiple things that need to be done.

  1. Seal all buildings
  2. Do not overfill trash cans or dumpsters
  3. Maintain a tightly closed barbecue
  4. Maintain garage doors closed
  5. Underground barriers

Finally when you are going to Deter, it's important that you encourage biodiversity, consider owl boxes and raptor holes, remove trash, don't leave your pet food out for too long, remove pet feces, pick up fallen fruit, remove piles of debris, motion detecting water sprays and use strobe lights.
