Tom Brown, a former chemical engineer and a modern-day Johnny Appleseed, joins the GaS. Since the 1990s, he has scoured Appalachia in pursuit of and preserving rare apple varieties. He has discovered around 1200 types of apples at his orchard Heritage Apples near Clemens, North Carolina, and displays over 700 of them.
