"The Talk" & Distracted Parents With The Dad Podcast

"The Talk."

Parents and kids both fear it.

It can often be awkward and confusing.  But, sometimes, (like we started discussing last week) it can go pretty smoothly and naturally.

You know what else can be a tough conversation?

The conversation about screen time.

With new studies coming out all of the time, there is more and more information telling parents that they need to limit the amount of time that their kids spend on phones, tablets, and computers.

What about the parents, though?

That's right.  What kind of negative impact are screens having on the adults that are raising those kids?

Well, a new study outlined in The Guardian suggests that too much screen time can impact parents very similarly to how it impacts kids.

Justin Worsham of The Dad Podcast doesn't see screens as evil.  Rather, he just thinks that they are another aspect of life that need to be kept in check.

"It is hard to say if screen time is the new Rock N Roll music or television that is destroying our civilization. Do we fear the new, or do we need to take time to adjust to the new reality of having the world at your fingertips?

Anyone can tell you that if you aren’t focused on your kids it’s bad for them. The problem with this kind of stuff is that it never seems to hit the people it should. My fear is that most of the time it ends up being ammo that a spouse uses when they want their partner to pay more attention to them or the kids.

So, like most things, I think it is best to make sure you are in the middle of the road. You can usually tell if your kids need more of your attention when they seem to be starving for it."
