The Golden State Killer, the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker, the Diamond Knot Killer.

Regardless of what name you know him by, he has been arrested.

Joseph James DeAngelo, now 72 years old, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. today at his home in Citrus Heights, California, where he has been living for the past 20 years.

DeAngelo is believed to have murdered 12 people, raped 45 people, and burglarized hundreds of homes.  Authorities think he started out by raping 37 people and killing 2 people in the Sacramento area and Central Valley between 1976 and 1978.  Following that spree, it is believed that he went on to commit crimes in Southern California and the Bay Area.

DeAngelo was booked this morning on two counts of murder from a Ventura County Sheriff's Department warrant.

Although authorities refused to confirm that DeAngelo was the Golden State Killer suspect, more information will be provided at a news conference today.

The true crime community deserves much of the credit for finally apprehending DeAngelo.  Michelle McNamara's book I'll Be Gone in the Dark reached the top of The New York Times' bestseller list last month, renewing interest in the case.  A documentary about the search for the killer was also played in Old Sacramento this month.
