The political consultant who cleverly utilized AI technology to craft fake robocalls featuring President Biden's voice now finds himself in serious trouble, facing not only millions of dollars in fines but also a slew of criminal charges.
These misleading calls were dispatched to thousands of voters in New Hampshire this past January, with the intention of convincing them to abstain from voting in the primary. The message misleadingly advised, "it's important that you save your vote for the November election."
The mastermind behind this scheme, Steven Kramer, claims he paid a magician in New Orleans a mere $150 to produce the recording. He insists that his goal was to highlight the potential dangers of AI-generated deepfakes.
As a result of his actions, Kramer is now up against 13 counts of misrepresenting himself as a candidate, along with facing a hefty $6 million fine imposed by the FCC. Additionally, Lingo Telecom, the company responsible for transmitting these calls, is also in hot water, facing a significant $2 million fine.
