The U.S. Air Force has launched an investigation after a “mystery company” purchased $800 million worth of land – right next to California’s Travis Air Force Base.
"We're very, very concerned about this," says Representative John Garamendi, a Democrat who represents the Bay Area. "It's so extensive and so secret, and it's impossible to get any information about what's happening here." In fact, it’s been eight months since Garamendi alerted the Air Force to the purchase – and so far, investigators have not been able to identify the purchaser or rule out a threat to national security, officials say.
"I have every reason in the world to believe that this land is adjacent to a critical national security platform, Travis Air Force Base,” Garamendi says. “Therefore, an area where spy operations or any other nefarious activity could take place -- that could detrimentally impact the ability of Travis Air Force Base to operate in a moment of national emergency."
