Greenland 'Zombie Ice' Expected To Raise Sea Level 10 Inches:
- A different kind of zombie is threatening humankind by wreaking havoc on the environment, a new study reveals.
- Zombie ice, which is ice that's attached to a larger glacier but is slowly melting, is expected to cause the world's ocean levels to rise by at least 10 inches in coming years, according to a study released Monday by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. "It’s dead ice," says lead author William Colgan. "It’s just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet. This ice has been consigned to the ocean, regardless of what climate emissions scenario we take now." In other words, nothing can be done to stop the ice, located in Greenland, from melting.
- While 10 inches of extra water might not sound like much, researchers say it's enough to cause higher tides, worsening storms and "societal, economic and environmental impacts," per the study.
