A 64-year-old Frenchman is alive after spending 16 hours in the Atlantic Ocean, clinging to his capsized boat, authorities say.
- Laurent Camprubi had set sail from Lisbon, Portugal earlier this week when his 39-foot boat capsized in freezing water about 14 nautical miles from Spain's Sisargas Islands, according to the Spanish Coast Guard. Responding to a distress signal, rescuers arrived at Camprubi's location a short time later -- and found Camprubi trapped under the overturned vessel. However, because it was too dark and the water was too volatile to stage a rescue, they tied floats to the boat to prevent it from sinking and left until the next morning, the Spanish Coast Guard reports.
- After he was rescued the following day, Camprubi was airlifted a nearby hospital, where he was given a clean bill of health. One rescuer says the boater's chances of survival had been "verging on the impossible."
