New Law Will Require Bartenders To Keep Track of Customers Drinking Tabs

California companies that serve beer, wine, or liquor must comply with a new regulation that takes effect next month.

  • Starting July 1, servers will be required to monitor the level of intoxication of their customers.
  • Under the new law, servers and management who provide alcoholic beverages must complete required training.
  • All wineries, eateries, bars, breweries, and other similar businesses fall under this category.
  •  Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) is requiring a three-step process is required for RBS training and certification. Participants must register with ABC as servers on the RBS portal, undergo RBS training from a recognized RBS training provider, and then go back to the RBS portal to take the ABC certification exam for alcohol servers.
  • According to (RBS) certification from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, servers and their managers must pass an online ABC administered RBS exam by August 31 to be certified. If they are newly hired, they must pass the exam and be certified 60 days from the first date of employment."
