FDA Slaps Restriction On J&J Vaccine Due To Blood Clot Risk

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced a restriction on Johnson and Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine, saying it poses a risk of "rare but serious blood clots."

  • Although the vaccine is still available, the FDA is recommending that it be administered only to adults who can't receive another brand, or those who specifically request it. The agency is recommending Pfizer or Moderna vaccine instead.
  • Although the blood-clotting issue has come up before, FDA officials say they decided to issue the restriction after revisiting data that outlined the life-threatening risks of Johnson and Johnson's vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a similar warning in December.
  • What brand of vaccine did you choose?
