Jaguar That Escaped Zoo Did So By Biting Through A Steel-Cable Roof

Turns out the jaguar that escaped and went on a killing spree in a New Orleans zoo last weekend may have gotten out by biting through roofing.

Officials are now saying the cat is believed to have bitten through the roofing of its habitat, made of a steel-cable barrier.

“I’m still processing that the animal was able to bite through this woven stainless steel cable,” Kyle Burks, the zoo’s vice president and general manager said during a press conference.

The 3-year-old Jaguar, named Valerio, killed nine animals during the escape, but no humans were hurt.

“We know he was out long enough to do the things he did.” Burks said in regard to the mauling of the five alpacas, three foxes and one emu. “For us, any time he was out was too long, and that’s why we’re focused on making sure it will never happen again.”
