New Orleans: Hometown of the Cocktail?

What's the difference between New York and New Orleans cocktails?

In a word:  complexity.  And New Orleans has got this one down where NY just simply don't.

1806 Magazine, Volume 2: New Orleans is out.  The gorgeous 192-page soft-cover book contains stories of the people behind cocktail culture in the Big Easy, New Orleans.

Nominated for the Spirited Awards!

1806 is a special edition publication which was funded by Rémy Cointreau’s Collectif 1806 program, and this year it's been nominated for Best Cocktail and Spirits Publication by Tales of the Cocktail!

The winner of the award will be announced at this year's Spirited Awards, the Oscars of the cocktail and spirit industry, on Saturday, July 22nd.

Some of the featured stories included in Volume 2 include:

  • The Voodoo Priestess – and Joan Rivers’s personal “ghost buster” – who was a bartender for 30 years and would mistakenly greet ghosts at the bar

  • The man almost single-handedly responsible for resurrecting Tiki culture in the US

  • The former international exotic dancer who now makes service a performance art

  • The story of Tales of the Cocktail, the people who created it, and the impact it has had on the city in its 16 years

  • Rare images of New Orleans – from the colorful Mardi Gras Indians to the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina

  • Recipes for the iconic cocktails of New Orleans

Rachel (CEO) and Kyle Ford (Creative Director) of Ford Media Lab and 1806 Magazine came in from New York to join the show and talk about the history of cocktails in America, the latest edition of 1806 Magazine, and the recent trend in throwback drinks.

From Sazeracs to Old Fashioneds to Negronis, Rachel and Kyle went in-depth with the Fork Reporter on the return of the rustic spirit.
