Maybe You Should Go To Bed Angry in Your Relationship

People always say never go to bed angry but that's not reality unfortunately and there are some benefits to going to bed angry.

The reality is people are fatigued and fatigue is associated with worse conflict skills: A recent experimental study tested couples in a sleep-deprivation vs. control condition and induced a conflict discussion. The sleep-deprived couples exhibited higher conflict severity, lower emotion recognition accuracy, and a worse post-discussion affect.

A good night’s sleep creates a more cognitive and emotional “room” to pause, recover, and re-engage constructively.

After restorative sleep:

• Emotional intensity softens

• Threat detection calms

• Reasoning and empathy rebound

• Stress chemistry normalizes

• Motivation to reconnect increases

That’s why “sleeping on it” — when done respectfully (without avoidance or stonewalling) — can genuinely make a fight easier to resolve.
