Circumcision Vs. Body Autonomy

According to the Center for Disease Control, "[a]cross the 32-year period from 1979 through 2010, the national rate of newborn circumcision declined 10% overall, from 64.5% to 58.3%. During this time, the overall percentage of newborns circumcised during their birth hospitalization was highest in 1981 at 64.9%, and lowest in 2007 at 55.4%."

More people are speaking out against circumcision because of the relatively unknown physical and mental dangers. Not only could there be the simple pain of the procedure, often done without anesthesia, but complications could develop like a narrowing of the urethra, which would require further procedures, and the risk of infection as well.

Anthony Losquadro joins Dr. Wendy as his role of children's advocate and as the founder and Director of Intaction, an organization dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of giving boys the choice to circumcise, or not.

Losquadro says, fear and pain are stored in their body even if they can't "remember" the experience. Other studies have suggested that men who were circumcised as babies grew up to experience symptoms of PTSD, depression, anger and intimacy issues.

Don't miss what Losquadro calls "The Four Powers of the Foreskin!" Did you know there are 20,000 nerve endings in it?

According to an article on Psychology Today, if the CDC guidance is followed, medical providers will be communicating to boys with intact genitals that their penises are somehow "bad" or inferior.

GUEST: Anthony Losquadro is the founder and Director of Intaction. He founded the organization in an effort to give children a voice regarding their body autonomy believing that every child has the inalienable right to an intact body.
