Trader Joe's Sued Over Allegations of Heavy Metals in Dark Chocolate

Trader Joe's is being sued by a customer who claims the company is endangering shoppers by selling dark chocolate products that contain harmful levels of lead and cadmium.

The suit follows a similar claim filed against the Hershey Company for similar reasons.

Both suits come after Consumer Reports say of the 28 dark chocolate bars they tested, 23 of them contained potentially harmful levels of lead, cadmium or a mix of both for those who eat more than an ounce a day.

In the report, Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate 72% Cacao was high in lead and the Trader Joe's The Dark Chocolate Lover's Chocolate 85% Cacao was high in both lead and cadmium.

The plaintiff in the suit says he bought both products, but claims he wouldn't have done so or at the least paid less had he known their contents.

In both suits, the plaintiffs are seeking $5 million in damages.
