Three suspects have been arrested in connection with Monday’s discovery of 51 dead immigrants in San Antonio, authorities say.
Although little information has been released about the arrests, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus says one of the suspects – the driver of the tractor-trailer in which the bodies were found – was nabbed after a witness spotted him abandoning the vehicle.
The truck was discovered late Monday evening, in what officials are calling the worst human smuggling tragedy in recorded history.
That’s the word from San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood, who also says the trailer’s air conditioner wasn’t working and the victims were not given water.
About a dozen people who survived the ordeal have been transported to Texas hospitals to be treated for heat stroke, Hood adds.
