Roger Goodell's Rider

The job of NFL commissioner is a big one, and is seen by some as the most powerful position in professional sports.  Roger Goodell is in that position.

But, it's no secret the NFL has been having a hard time lately, ratings have been down, public perception isn't great, players involved in various criminal incidents has left the league reeling.

In the midst of all of this, Roger Goodell is in contract negotiations. His current contract is up in 2018, and he has a five-year extension that could leave him in place until 2024.

But no matter... they're getting started on this new contract right now!

Goodell's annual compensation has varied.  In 2014, his compensation was listed as $44 million.  In 2015 it was $34 million.

But we don't know what his current salary is.  Why?  Because the NFL gave up its non-profit status in 2015 so Goodell's current salary is a mystery.

Well, a few guys at ESPN recently did an on air report about Goodell's contract demands, quoting an 'unnamed owner', which many believe is none other than Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

Why?  Because Jerry Jones is one of five NFL owners that want Goodell gone, and he's been in a pretty public fight with the league about it.

According to the report, for his contract, Roger Goodell is asking for:

  • $49.5 million a year
  • a private jet (not just for use while he has a job...but for LIFE)
  • lifetime health insurance for him and his family

The 'unnamed owner' in the ESPN report allegedly said.

"There are several owners in this league who don't make $40 million a year.  That number for Roger just seems too much. It's offensive.  It's unseemly."

The NFL has denied the report.
