Iowa Results Show Buttigieg, Sanders Leading With 97% of Vote Reported

Technical Difficulties Continue To Delay Iowa Caucus Results

The Iowa Democratic party released partial results Thursday that showed showed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg leading the pack of Democratic candidates who are vying for their party's nomination for president in 2020.

With 97% of precincts reporting, Buttigieg leads the race, with 26.2% of state delegates, with Sanders closely trailing the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana at 26.1%.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is third, with 18.2%, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden at 15.8% and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar at 12.2%.

Full results are expected to be released later on Thursday.

The Iowa State Caucuses held Monday night were marred by inconsistent reporting thanks to a technical problem with the app the party was using to report results. Monday's caucus will determine which candidate receives the majority of the state's 41 pledged delegates that are up for grabs. Claiming victory in Iowa would also give the winner much needed momentum as the candidates shift their focus and campaigns to New Hampshire ahead of the state's primary next week, Tuesday (Feb. 11).

The leading candidates, including Biden, Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Sanders, will be joined by billionaire executive Tom Steyer, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and entrepreneur Andrew Yang, in a debate Friday night in Manchester, New Hampshire at St. Anselm College.

ABC is co-hosting the debate with WMUR-TV and Apple News.
