SurveyUSA Poll Finds Prop 6 in Close Call

A new poll released Monday by SurveyUSA found voters came to a close tie on whether or not to support Proposition 6.

The survey asked 468 registered voters who had already turned in ballots or plan to by tomorrow's election how they would vote on the prop, which aims to repeal the gas tax.

The numbers were close with 44 percent of voters voted in favor, 41 percent opposed and 14 percent undecided.

This comes after several past surveys found Prop 6 losing to its non-supporters. The San Diego Union Tribune associates ballot title wordings with what is causing the stark differences in supporters on the surveys.

Polls that used the official ballot title: “Eliminates Recently Enacted Road Repair and Transportation Funding by Repealing Revenues …” found that voters were likely to keep the gas tax increase.

By comparison, SurveyUSA’s initial poll asked respondents whether they wanted to “repeal gasoline and diesel taxes, and vehicle fees” and found voters favored repealing the tax by a 2-to-1 margin.

Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California, set out to fix the confusion and mailed out ballot title corrections that informed voters the true definition of Prop 6 and labeled the state's ballot wording as "sinister."

Gov. Jerry Brown fired back at DeMaio calling him a "political terrorist."
