Family Members Speak Out on Rocky Marriage Behind San Bernardino School Shooting

(KFI) - Family members are speaking out about the rocky relationship between the man who shot his wife at a San Bernardino elementary school. The mother of Karen Smith (the special-needs teacher who was shot and killed by her husband), says that the couple had been dating off and on for several years before getting married back in January.

That's when the mother says Anderson began changing. Three weeks after the pair exchanged nuptials, the mother says Anderson began picking on and talking down to his new wife.

Police say Anderson went to North Park Elementary School Tuesday and used a large-caliber revolver to shot and kill his estranged wife before ultimately killing himself. Anderson gained access after telling the front office he was there to drop off a package for his wife.

The San Bernardino Police Chief said that Anderson did have a criminal history including domestic violence, weapons as well as possible drug charges. There were no details immediately available on those cases.

The shooting also left an 8-year-old student dead as well as another 9-year-old student in the hospital. The 9-year-old is in stable condition.

Dozens of people are mourning the loss of life at North Park Elementary School. The school will remain closed for at least the next two days. Parents with questions are being urged to call the district office.
