Drone Shows: The New Trend for Fourth of July Celebrations?

More cities in Southern California are switching from fireworks to drone shows for Fourth of July celebrations to reduce environmental harm. Laguna Beach, known for its traditional fireworks display since the 1980s, is making the change this year. Instead of fireworks, they’ll light up the sky with a drone show at Heisler Park, costing $75,000 compared to $42,000 for the pyrotechnics. Councilmember George Weiss explained that concerns over noise, air pollution, and the impact on wildlife and residents with PTSD drove the decision.

Other cities, like La Jolla Shores, Downtown Los Angeles, and Rancho Palos Verdes, are also using drones for their Independence Day festivities. Scott Epstein from the South Coast Air Quality Management District highlighted the health risks of fireworks’ particle pollution, which can aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. He believes drone shows are a great way to celebrate while keeping the air clean.

Despite some resistance to breaking with tradition, Laguna Beach hopes the community will embrace the change, enjoy the show, and support the environment. Weiss said, “I hope it’s a great show for families and a celebration of the country’s founding as we do yearly. I hope people will accept that change for the environment.”

Laguna Beach’s show will feature 300 drones in a 15-minute display. It’s slated to begin at 9 p.m. on July 4 from Monument Point in Heisler Park.
