Dr. Kwane Stewart, is known as 'The Street Vet.'
He dedicates his time to helping the pets of those homeless in Southern California through free veterinary services, knowing that often, these pets are the only thing keeping people going.
His effort started more than a decade ago. He had worked for a county shelter in Northern California, and in 2011, he thought about quitting because he kept seeing people surrender their pets solely because they could not afford sometimes simple medical treatment.
But a moment outside a 7-Eleven where he gets his coffee set him on his crusade. He stopped to examine the dog of a homeless man, he treated the dog's skin condition and the man said, 'Thank you for not ignoring me.' Dr. Stewart says those words inspired him to help the pets of those in need. He says:
“It doesn’t matter what your situation is … I see a pet in need, and I see a person who cares for them dearly who just needs some help.”
Recently, Dr. Stewart was named CNN's Hero Of The Year, an honor that comes with a $100,000 prize. Once again, Dr. Stewart showed his dedication and selflessness by taking his prize and splitting it among all ten finalists.
