Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp, law enforcement officials, and local business people have expressed support for amending Proposition 47, a California law that reduces certain nonviolent felonies to misdemeanors. Smittcamp argues that the law has resulted in an increase in property crimes and drug offenses.
The proposed amendment would allow prosecutors to charge individuals committing thefts under $950 as either misdemeanors or felonies, depending on the individual's criminal history. The amendment would also increase penalties for repeat offenders.
Smittcamp hopes that the amendment will provide more options for holding criminals accountable and reduce the negative impact of Proposition 47.
