In an exclusive interview with NBCLA, Nicholas Gutierrez stated that the crash that injured 25 recruits was not intentional and that he fell asleep at the wheel.

“I didn’t intentionally do it,” Gutierrez said, adding that he fell asleep on his way to work. “I wish it never happened. I feel bad it happened.”

Gutierrez claims that once he was dragged out the car by policeman:

“They tried to say that I did it intentionally, which I didn’t. I kept on telling them I didn’t.”

Twenty-five law enforcement recruits were injured, with five of them in critical condition in the hospital. One of the five, however, is in "grave condition."

"Alejandro Martinez, has suffered setbacks that have left him in grave condition. Please keep him and his family in your prayers," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said on social media.
