In order to prepare for dangerously high temperatures brought on by a heat dome that is developing over the West, managers of the state's electrical grid on Wednesday issued the first of what is anticipated to be a series of Flex Alerts through Labor Day. These alerts urge Californians to reduce their energy consumption.

The Independent System Operator announced that the first alert would be in force on Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. in an effort "to avert power outages." The warning is a voluntary call for conservation in light of the rising temperatures. When the sun is lowering but it's still sweltering outside, late afternoon and early evening are the riskiest times.
