President Trump Threatens To Close Sections Of The Southern Border

President Donald Trump is suggesting that he may close sections of the United States' border with Mexico to help curb the number of people who are trying to enter the country illegally. In a series of tweets, Trump called on Mexico to "immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States." He suggested that it "would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and 'talk.'"

The president also blamed the Democrats for the current situation at the border, saying they are responsible for giving the United States "the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the World."

Trump's threat to close the southern border, one that he also made prior to the midterm elections last year, comes as officials from Customs and Border Protection say the agency is on pace to apprehend over 100,000 people trying to illegally cross the border in the month of March, which would be the highest monthly total of apprehensions in a decade.

Earlier in the week, the agency said they set a new record by apprehending 4,117 people in a single day.

"Mexico can stop them, but chose not to," Trump told reporters on Friday. "So they're going to stop them, and if they don't, we'll close the border, and we'll keep it closed for a long time."
