White House Returns Flag to Full Staff Following Death of John McCain

flag at white house returns to full staff following john mccain's death

Update 1 p.m: The flag on the White House roof was returned to half-staff following criticism from veterans groups and others.

The American flag was back at full staff at the White House on Monday, less than 48-hours following the death of Arizona Senator John McCain on Saturday.

The White House lowered the flag to half-staff Saturday night following McCain's death at the age of 81. The longtime senator was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer in July 2017, and was undergoing various treatments, including both chemotherapy and radiation over the last year up until Friday when his family announced that the senator was discontinuing treatment.

In the past, flags have generally remained at half staff at the White House for longer following the deaths of other sitting senators. Flags at other Washington D.C. landmarks including the Capitol, and the Washington Monument have remained at half staff.

Over the weekend, Trump tweeted a statement offering his condolences to McCain's family, that did not mention the senator's time as a war hero or his contributions as a longtime member of the Republican party.

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" he tweeted Saturday.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says the "flag is to be flown at half-staff at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels in the Washington D.C., area on the day and day after the death of a United States senator, representative, territorial delegate, or the resident commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico."
