Ten Charged in Unrest at UC Irvine in May 2024

SANTA ANA (CNS) - Ten people were charged Wednesday with refusing orders to disperse during unrest on the UC Irvine campus in May.

A pro-Palestinian encampment had been largely peaceful for a few weeks, but when protesters surrounded the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall on May 15, campus police sought help from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and Irvine police as well as other neighboring law enforcement agencies.

Hundreds of law enforcement personnel descended on the Irvine campus to break up the encampment.

Those charged Wednesday are:

-- Michael Chang, 29, of Irvine, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse at scene of a riot;

-- Jonathan Brook Haley, 51, of Oceanside, charged with a misdemeanor count of failure to disperse;

-- Tiffany Willoughby Herard, 50, of Irvine, charged with misdemeanor counts of failure to disperse, resisting police with the threat of violence and resisting arrest;

-- Fantana Zadran, 39, of Irvine, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse;

-- Rami Anabtawi, 40, of Silverardo, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse;

-- Miriam Castro, 27, of Irvine, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse;

-- Kevyn Garcia, 24, of Upland, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse;

-- Adel Shaker Hijazi, 40, of Irvine, charged with misdemeanor failure to disperse;

-- Angie Belen Monreal, 27, of Garden Grove, charged with failure to disperse and resisting arrest;

-- Marah Quran, 20, of Irvine, charged with failure to disperse.

Prosecutors are reviewing evidence in the cases of 40 others arrested at the protest.
