DUARTE (CNS) - An allegedly impaired driver was in custody Saturday after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a lengthy pursuit that finally ended in Duarte.

The chase began in Monterey Park just before 10 p.m. Friday and continued on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and the Foothill (210) Freeway and into the communities of Azusa, Irwindale, Duarte and the San Gabriel Valley.

At least three times, the driver stopped and exchanged words with pursuing CHP officers, gesturing and waving his hands before driving away.

The CHP deployed two spike strips in an effort to slow the driver down, but both attempts were evaded until the suspect reached Duarte. There, officers deployed a third spike strip and used less than lethal weapons on him at Huntington Drive and Encanto Parkway, causing him to surrender just before midnight.

Police recovered bags of marijuana from the car after the suspect was arrested, according to ABC7.
