SANTA ANA (CNS) - A maintenance worker for Disney filed a lawsuit Thursday in Orange County Superior Court seeking class-action status, alleging the company failed to pay higher wages for employees using their own tools.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Charlie Torres and all of the other maintenance employees. Torres began working at one of Disney's hotels on Feb. 14, 2022, as an assistant maintenance engineer.
Torres alleged in the lawsuit that it was "common company policy" to require maintenance engineers "to provide their own hand tools and equipment." That would require the company to pay double the minimum wage, the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit also alleges that it was "common company policy of providing no rest periods and no meal periods to employees working at least five-hour shifts or second meal periods for shifts of at least 10 hours."
Disney officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
