BURBANK (CNS) - Burbank police Friday said suspected explosives removed from a residential property by a bomb squad were old road flares.

Officers went to the 1800 block of North Maple Street at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday on a report of a "suspicious item," according to the Burbank Police Department.

"The homeowner was cleaning out their garage and found a metal box containing what they believed to be old dynamite belonging to their deceased father who worked as a miner," police said in a statement.

"When the officers arrived, they examined the item and could not determine what it was, other than it was extremely corroded," police said. "The officers took a picture of the item and notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Arson and Explosives Detail, who assists with possible explosive-related incidents in the City of Burbank."

The neighborhood was cordoned off and several residential units were evacuated in the interest of safety, police said.

Investigators from the sheriff's explosives detail examined the item and determined that the box contained corroded road flares, which were safely removed, officials said.

The area was declared safe at about 5 p.m., police said. No injuries were reported.

"The Burbank Police Department would like to remind members of the community to remain vigilant and not touch, move, or handle any suspicious or unknown item, but immediately notify local law enforcement," police said.
