SAN PEDRO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday served search warrants throughout the South Bay and in other areas of the state and made "multiple arrests" in an investigation targeting the sale of illegal firearms and drugs by a local gang and the Mexican Mafia.

The multi-agency investigation, which began in October, included personnel from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the FBI

Details of the operation were expected to be released at a Wednesday morning news conference at the LAPD Harbor Community Police Station.

"The target of the investigation was the sale of illegal firearms and narcotics throughout the Harbor area," the FBI said in a statement.

The investigation expanded beyond the local gang "into the upper echelons of the Mexican Mafia," according to the FBI.

"Today, the FBI served multiple search warrants throughout the South Bay and as far away as Bakersfield," according to an FBI statement. "Multiple suspects were taken into custody in addition to many firearms, including ghost guns and assault weapons, as well as many pounds of illegal narcotics, including fentanyl."
