LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Archbishop José H. Gomez asked the faithful Wednesday to join him in prayer for Pope Francis as he is treated for a respiratory infection.

"Let's pray for our Holy Father Pope Francis as he undergoes his medical treatments at Rome's Gemelli Hospital," Gomez said in a statement delivered through Twitter. "We entrust him to the tender care of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and we ask that she keep him close in her love."

The 86-year-old pope went to the hospital Wednesday for some scheduled check-ups that revealed a respiratory infection that will require a few days of appropriate hospital medical treatment, according to the Vatican. COVID- 19 has been ruled out.
