LONG BEACH (CNS) - A man was in custody Wednesday in connection with the 2020 death of a Long Beach woman who authorities thought had overdosed on drugs and alcohol accidentally, police said.
Jerid Nakamura, 35, was arrested Monday and booked on suspicion of murder in the death of Sokly Sar, 36, the Long Beach Police Department reported. Nakamura was being held on $2 million bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
On July 6, 2020, officers were sent to the 1700 block of Cedar Avenue to assist the Long Beach Fire Department on an overdose death of a female adult, police said in a statement.
"At the time, there was limited evidence to believe that a crime occurred," the LBPD said. "The Los Angeles County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner determined the death as an accidental overdose of methamphetamine and alcohol."
On Monday, Nakamura, the person who had notified authorities of the woman's apparent overdose death, "came to LBPD Police Headquarters, asking to speak with homicide detectives regarding the 2020 incident," police said.
"During their conversation, Nakamura told detectives he and the deceased woman were in a dating relationship," police said. "Nakamura told detectives he gave the decedent narcotics, and he is responsible for her death. Detectives arrested Nakamura who was booked for murder at Long Beach City Jail."
Nakamura was a Long Beach city employee at the time of the woman's death, police said.
"Detectives anticipate presenting the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office this week," police said.
