LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Firefighters hoisted a 61-year-old man to safety from a dirt island in the Tujunga wash in Sunland Saturday morning.

The rescue occurred at 7:10 a.m. Saturday after a night of heavy rain and winds. The man told firefighters he was driving his van when it was hit by a falling tree.

He was taken to a hospital, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
