SAN FERNANDO (CNS) - A 59-year-old San Fernando Valley resident has been arrested on suspicion of cargo theft for allegedly possessing at least $750,000 worth of merchandise from Best Buy in an unincorporated area of Fresno County, authorities said Saturday.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol's Central Division Organized Retail Crime Task Force responded just after noon on Dec. 1 to a call of possible suspicious activity at 3153 E. Malaga Ave., near the Golden State (5) Freeway in Fresno County, CHP Sgt. Robert Montano said.
The 911 caller reported what appeared to be a commercial load inside of a truck/trailer being stolen, Montano said.
"CHP officers responded to the scene and observed two semi-trailer trucks backed upon against each other, cross-decked, to unload the stolen merchandise," he said. "The suspects were observed by witnesses transferring the merchandise from one trailer to the other."
Three unidentified men fled the scene in unknown directions. A fourth suspect, San Fernando Valley resident Jaspreet Singh, was detained on scene and arrested, he said.
"ORCTF has several leads on the identity of one the suspects, which fled prior to CHP arrival," he said.
Singh was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of cargo theft, said Montano, adding that "through the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the approximate value of the electronics was in excess of $750,000."
