What we know about Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock

Last night 64-year-old Stephen Paddock killed at least 58 people and injured another 515 who were attending a country music festival outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Paddock opened fire from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. This is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The gunfire sent more than 22,000 people scrambling for their lives:

Stephen Paddock had been living in Mesquite, Nevada, which is 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Mesquite is a retiree community with golf courses and casinos.

He was divorced, was not known to have any children, and was living with a woman at his Mesquite home.

According to his brother Eric Paddock, Stephen never showed violent tendencies. When Eric learned of what happened, he said:

"He was my brother and it's like an asteroid fell out of the sky."

Stephen Paddock's father was a bank robber who spent years on the FBI's most-wanted list. The FBI lists Benjamin Hoskins Paddock as being on it's most-wanted list from June 10, 1969 to May 5, 1977.

Eric Paddock said his father died a few years ago, and that he was never with his mother. Eric said he was born while his dad was on the run.

Stephen Paddock's last communication to Eric was a text message asking him about their mother in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. According to Eric, Stephen also spoke to their mother on the phone a week or two ago.

Eric Paddock says Stephen had no ties to terror or hate groups, and can't understand why his brother did this:

"He was a wealthy guy playing video poker... on cruises."

Marilou Danley has been identified as the woman currently living with Paddock. So far it doesn't look like she had anything to do with the shooting as she was in the Philippines when it happened.

Paddock had been staying at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino since last Thursday. He killed himself in his room on the 32nd floor before a SWAT team burst in.
