LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Actor/comedian Martin Short's 42-year-old daughter has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a report Tuesday.

Without revealing any details of the death, a representative for Short sent a statement to TMZ saying, "It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world."

Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, TMZ reported that Katherine Short was found dead at her Hollywood Hills home around 6:40 p.m. Monday. According to TMZ, Katherine Short, a Los Angeles social worker, was also involved with an organization known as Bring Change to Mind, which works to "end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness," according to its website.

She was the eldest of Short's three adopted children with his late wife Nancy Dolman, who died of cancer in 2010.
