Bill Handel On The Olympic Condom Crisis

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina has experienced an unexpected shortage as organizers confirmed the athletes' village has completely depleted its supply of condoms in just three days.

The Guardian cited a report from Italian newspaper La Stampa, that approximately 10,000 condoms were initially provided for the roughly 3,000 athletes competing in the Games. "The supplies ran out in just three days," an anonymous athlete told the newspaper. "They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when."

The organizing committee has confirmed that additional supplies are on the way, though they haven't specified exactly when the replenishment will arrive.

This marks the first time in Olympic history that a Games has completely exhausted its condom supply. The practice of providing free contraceptives at Olympic villages began in 1988 at the Seoul Games as a public health measure to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and prevent sexually transmitted infections.
