Federal Air Marshals Mistaken For ICE Agents Sparks Panic In LA Restaurant

Air marshals were escorted out of a Los Angeles restaurant Sunday (January 25) following growing tensions linked to anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests downtown. The incident came on the heels of a dispersal order issued by police after demonstrations erupted in response to the recent fatal shooting of an ICU nurse by immigration officers in Minneapolis.

Los Angeles police issued the dispersal order around 5 p.m. for the area along Alameda Street, between Temple and Aliso streets, as protesters marched through the downtown area. The protest was part of a wave of demonstrations that swept Southern California after immigration officers shot and killed Alex Pretti, 37, in Minneapolis on Saturday. This was the second fatal shooting involving ICE officers in that city this year.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced via X that anyone remaining in the dispersal zone risked arrest. Despite the tense atmosphere, CBS Los Angeles reported that protesters eventually left the area without any arrests.

Both the recent shootings and the subsequent protests have heightened security concerns, leading to situations like the one where air marshals had to be escorted from a restaurant for their safety. No further incidents were reported in connection with the restaurant or the ongoing protests.

Authorities have not released additional details about the restaurant incident or any potential investigations into actions by law enforcement. Protests and calls for accountability are expected to continue in the coming days as community groups respond to recent events.
