A tragic accident at Mammoth Mountain claimed the life of 30-year-old ski patroller Cole Murphy.

On Friday morning, Murphy and another patroller were performing avalanche mitigation work on Lincoln Mountain when they were caught in a sudden slide. Murphy succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, while the other patroller, whose name has not been released, is recovering in the hospital following successful surgery.

Mammoth Mountain officials described Murphy as "an experienced patroller with a deep passion for the mountains and love for his career." His family shared a heartfelt statement, expressing their grief and gratitude for the support they've received. They said, "The mountain was where Cole felt most alive. It was his place of purpose, his community, and his second home."

Murphy's partner, Hayley, and his family are mourning the loss of a man who was known for his kindness, generosity, and love for adventure. The resort, which closed temporarily after the avalanche, reopened on Sunday. This incident marks the second ski patroller death on the mountain this year, following a similar tragedy less than a year ago.
