LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A person was killed and 10 people were sent to hospitals Sunday morning from a multi-vehicle collision on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights, where a big rig crashed into multiple vehicles, authorities said.

The crash on the southbound freeway, just south of 4th Street, occurred about 5:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least one vehicle caught fire and a "physical rescue" was requested, said Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The CHP shut down all southbound lanes at 5:22 a.m. for at least two to three hours and confirmed that nine vehicles sustained major front end damage. It was unclear if the big rig was loaded.

A total of 15 people were assessed with 10 patients transported to local hospitals, Middleton said.

Paramedics transported some of the injured -- with moderate injuries -- to Adventist Health White Memorial hospital, the CHP said.

There was no other immediate information available.
