A new report estimates that the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics could generate between $13 billion and $17 billion in economic impact for Southern California's five counties. The report, released by the Southern California Association of Governments, highlights the potential benefits of hosting the Games, including a significant boost to regional GDP and job creation. According to NBC Los Angeles, Los Angeles County is expected to receive the largest share of the economic benefits, with other counties also seeing substantial returns.
Economist Dr. Wallace Walrod noted that the Games could create an estimated 36,000 construction jobs, over 20,000 administrative and support jobs, and tens of thousands more in performing arts, technical services, and food service. Tourism spending is also projected to surge, as Olympic visitors tend to spend twice as much per day as regular tourists and stay longer.
The 2028 Olympics will mark the third time Los Angeles has hosted the Games. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for July 14, 2028, with events running through July 30. The Paralympic Games will follow from August 15 to August 27. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium will jointly host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Long Beach, a city hosting 18 Olympic events, anticipates lasting benefits from infrastructure investments in roads, airports, and convention centers. Long Beach City Council member Cindy Allen expressed optimism about the positive impact on the local workforce.
As preparations continue, Los Angeles County is collaborating with its 88 cities to ensure a successful event. The county has established an information hub to assist communities and businesses in preparing for the Games, as noted on the LA County Olympics website.
