Nearly 200 cattle have mysteriously disappeared from the Uncompahgre Plateau in western Colorado, sparking an extensive investigation. The first report of missing cattle was filed just before Thanksgiving, with subsequent reports from multiple ranchers, including Kelly Burch, who noted 43 animals missing from her herd. In total, 187 cows and calves have vanished, leading authorities to suspect theft.
The missing cattle prompted an unprecedented investigation involving local sheriffs, a multiagency task force, search planes, and a $10,000 reward. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, with much of the possible crime scene still covered in snow. Sergeant Chuck Searcy of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office, who is leading the investigation, believes the theft was likely carried out by someone familiar with the area and the cattle industry. He ruled out insurance fraud and noted that the missing cattle could be worth at least $400,000 at market due to soaring beef prices.
The Uncompahgre Plateau is a rugged area where cattle graze during the warmer months. The missing cattle, mostly calves, have left ranchers like Burch facing significant financial losses. Burch, whose family has been ranching in the area for over a century, described the loss as a "kick in the gut" and hopes for a resolution. The investigation continues, with authorities seeking any leads or evidence that could help solve the mystery.
According to the Washington Post, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, federal agencies, and local law enforcement are all involved in the task force. However, the investigation faces challenges due to the harsh terrain and weather conditions. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office.
