Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, waived extradition on Thursday (December 19) in Pennsylvania, allowing his transfer to New York City. Mangione, 26, faces 11 charges, including first-degree murder and terrorism in New York.
New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated that Mangione's actions were intended to "sow terror."
Mangione will be held at Rikers Island in isolation due to his high-profile status.
He arrived in New York City by helicopter and was transported to the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse, where he will be arraigned on federal charges. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said that the federal case against Mangione "will proceed in parallel” with the state case against him.
It is unclear when Mangione will appear in state court.
Mangione was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized at a McDonald's.
Mangione appeared calm during his court appearance in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where he also faces charges of gun possession, forgery, and false identification.
Mangione allegedly used a "ghost gun" and had a manifesto criticizing the healthcare industry. His mother had reported him missing in November, and authorities identified him from surveillance footage.
