TurboTax Isn't Allowed to Say It's "Free" Anymore

It has been announced that the popular tax filing program TurboTax is banned from calling itself free.

  • This follows a filing from the Federal Trade Commission that said the program from Intuit could not be referred to as "free" if it was not free for everyone or if it was cost-free to a percentage of qualified customers.
"When the matter ultimately returns to a neutral body we will prevail," Intuit shared in a statement on Monday. "Intuit has always been clear, fair and transparent with its customers and is committed to free tax preparation."

May 2022 Intuit who owns TurboTax agreed to pay $141 million to lower-income Americans who were “unfairly charged,” Approximately 4.4 million consumers were affected.
