Five people are dead after they abandoned their vehicles on a snowy Pennsylvania highway and were struck by a tractor-trailer.
- The incident happened Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m. EST after a minivan driver lost control and hit a median on Interstate 81 in Scranton, authorities say. The four people who were in the van got out, along with another driver who’d been following them, police say. All five were hit by the tractor-trailer and died on the scene, says County Coroner Timothy Rowland.
- Several inches of snow had fallen on the Scranton area earlier in the day, creating hazardous road conditions, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
