LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass today announced the appointment of Celine Cordero as deputy chief of staff, who will oversee the deputy mayors responsible for communications, public safety, community safety and economic opportunity.

Cordero started in the mayor's office Monday, and is one of three deputy chiefs of staff who will report to the mayor's chief of staff.

``Celine Cordero's work will be essential to meeting our ambitious goals for making Los Angeles safer and more affordable, and I look forward to working with her,'' Bass said in a statement. For the last decade, Cordero served as the senior vice president of EKA Government Advocacy and Public Affairs. She is an attorney whose extensive experience includes serving as a deputy mayor for legislative and intergovernmental relations, an associate director for the Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety under former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and director of external affairs for Los Angeles World Airports.

Cordero earned her bachelor's degree in political science from Cal State Long Beach and her law degree from Santa Clara University.

``I am honored to join Mayor Bass' administration and look forward to working to implement the mayor's vision related to safety, security and opportunity for all communities in Los Angeles,'' Cordero said in a statement.
