The biggest volcano on Earth erupted and instead of staying away, tourists are flying to Hawaii in droves to see the spectacle. The volcano is called Mauna Loa or "long mountain" in Hawaiian and it is so massive that it's twice the size of Mount Everest if you measure from its underwater base. Until recently the volcano hadn't erupted for almost forty years.
Mauna Loa spewing the hot stuff has turned Hawaii's slow winter tourist season into a boon for its hospitality industry. Many hotels are booked through Christmas and the road to the volcano is traffic-jammed with thousands of tourists trying to get an up-close look at all the lava. Most people like to spend their holidays by a cozy fire, but these volcano-chasing tourists might be taking it a bit too far.
