TV News Helicopter Crashes Near North Carolina Highway

Two people were killed when a TV news helicopter crashed near a highway in Charlotte, NC on Tuesday afternoon.

  • The copter belonged to local TV station WBTV and both victims were members of the WBTV news team - meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag.
  • No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Police say it appears that Tayag made "diversionary moves" to avoid hitting traffic.
  • Police Chief Johnny Jennings says it was no accident that Tayag didn't crash onto the Interstate.
"The pilot is a hero in my eyes," he tweeted. "Witnesses indicated that the pilot made diversionary moves away from the highway to save lives. Because of his heroic acts, there were no further injuries or vehicles on the highway involved in the incident."

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash
